An Indian couple did a back flip off Yosemite’s Taft point a few days ago. Just a couple months before, a man did the same trick off of Nevada Fall.
We used to joke “back up…a little more..” Ha ha. No one actually did back off a cliff then.
But nowadays with hand-held smart phones, people are too shy to ask another to snap the photo. Could be that millenials spend HOURS a day on their “device” and are not able to communicate with other humanoids to take their photo. Sad.
I call them “selfishes” You just gotta have your mug in front of scenery. Taft Point is off the Glacier Point Road and is an easy walk from the road. You are on the south side of the valley and able to look across to El Capitan. Great shot.
There are several points to look over at the crags as you hike further west. Stanford, Dewey, etc. You can even cross over Bridalveil creek – the one that feeds Bridalveil Fall. Cool.
Do we need signs up that people will ignore anyway? “NO TEXTING; NO SELFIES.”
Gimmie a break. Sorry for the …

The so-named Ferguson Ridge Fire has been raging near Yosemitte for about a week
now. Ferguson is probably better known for the massive rock fall that blocked hwy 140 north of Mariposa a few years ago.
This fire is in the “Savages Trading Post” area, south of El Portal… 8 miles outside the Arch Rock Gate.

The Yosemite Valley and Wawona are closed. Do NOT come. This includes all hotels, campgrounds, and visitor services. Smoke has reached extremely unhealthy air levels. This means your Half Dome permits are null and void. Do not attempt it. 9,000 ft altitude has less Q2 coupled with inhaling smoke AND the exertions make for a dumb decision to attempt it.
Highway 41, is closed between Tunnel View and Chilnualna Falls (near Wawona).
Tuolumne Meadows and other parts of the park are open…but if the fire continues to grow, they may be closed.
We are now at 36,000 acres burned with 25% containment. Projections are for a target of July 29 for further closure decisions.

Two days after Jason Wells and Tim Klein died on El Capitan, a new record for speed climbing up El Cap was set. Alex Honnold and Tommy Caldwell now have the record (beating the one they set May 30 – just days before). They made it up the nearly 3,000 feet in 2 hours 1 minute 50 seconds.

Is this crazy? You decide. The magic 2-hour barrier will be pursued. More may fall. Wells and Klein were said to be prepping for their own speed climb. Almost a quarter mile straight up. I get winded going up 4 flights of stairs! A 4-minute mile. A 2-hour marathon. 60 home runs. 42 Half Dome hikes. All goals.
