Ferguson Fire update 8/5/18 4 pm
82,000 acres burned. 35% contained. Fire is creeping above the Arch Rock Entrance Station. Is also moving up the Merced River Canyon towards West Yosemite Valley. The fire has crossed Glacier Point Road, forced firefighters to shelter in place at Badger Pass. Although the fire is burning near Foresta, structure protection is currently in place. No structures have been destroyed in Foresta, El Portal, or Yosemite West.
The areas of the park that have been closed will remain so indefinitely.…
Fire Update 7/30/18 4 pm
Sadly, a second firefighter has died in the Ferguson Fire. He was hit by a falling tree. 30% contained and at 56,000 acres. 3,700 personnel.
The Park will reopen this Friday at 4 pm…so your Half Dome permits will be honored if you have one for Aug 5. Tip – use the 2-day process for a good chance. Apply Aug 3 and you will beat a lot of the crowd. Personally, I can’t see the park being open with the same smoke that has hovered for weeks. Altitude and particulate will make exertion harder. But oh well.
If you hold permits for when the fire closed the park…sorry, but pour some BBQ sauce on them and munch away. There is no process for refunds or reschedules. Just like rain or snow. If the park says anything, I’ll let you know. It’s unrealistic to deal with potentially 375/day people. Hike Clouds Rest.
Today’s view of Half Dome and El Cap. Yeah, not much.
